Wasa Lodge is located on the banks of Wasa Lake in the heart of the Kasanka National Park. The seven ochre coloured rooms (four chalets and three smaller rondavels) are located along the edge of the lake. The chalets can accommodate 4 people and have en-suite bathrooms with flush toilets and showers as well as a verandah with views over the lake. The main building has a dining area overlooking the lake and a relaxed seating area and bar around a fireplace.
Activities from Wasa include guided walks around the lake and other nearby lakes, game drives to search for sitatunga, or visit the Fibwe tree-hide – a short climb up to a platform in a magnificent mahogany tree. It is probably the best place in Africa for observing wild sitatunga, and sightings of these elusive antelope are virtually guaranteed. A wide variety of different types of vegetation results in it harbouring a diverse range of animal and bird species. As well as elephant, buffalo and thousands of puku, it’s possible to find Sharp’s grysbok and sable. Kasanka’s predators are shy, but hyena and leopard do occur, along with a host of mongooses, and some rare reptile species.
During the months of October to December this area comes alive during the bat migration. You will witness an enormous gathering of up to 15 million straw-coloured fruit bats. This is one of the highest concentrations of mammals anywhere on the planet and watching them fly at sunset is an awesome sight and is unique to Kasanka.
