Today we head for Kafunta River Lodge in South Luangwa National Park, Zambia. South Luangwa National Park is known to be one of the greatest wildlife sanctuaries in the world: 60 different animal species and over 450 bird species living in a pristine environment.
Kafunta is a classic Zambian safari lodge where you will find the rest and peace you need after an exciting day of game viewing. At Kafunta each of the luxury private chalets and the main lounge/dining area has fantastic views of the game rich flood plain.
After a breathtaking safari we leave South Luangwa to see the best parts of Malawi. After breakfast we will head to the stunning Luwawa Forest Lodge. Here you will be based in chalet accommodation which caters on a full board basis. You will spend one night in the lodge.
The lodge contains most things that you would require for a relaxing stay, including a sauna. There is plenty of room in the dining area of the lodge and all the food is freshly prepared using fresh organic vegetables from a vegetable garden. The staff takes great pride in producing wholesome, homely and very tasty organic meals for everyone to enjoy. Breakfast, lunch and evening meals are served but you can also order afternoon snacks if required.
The Luwawa Mountain Bike trail takes three days Cycling, a total distance of 150km, with the first night spent at Kasito Forestry Lodge with all facilities provided. The second night is spent camping outside Kawalazi Estate Clubhouse, where a bar, showers, toilets and kitchen are at your disposal. All food, cooking, camping and mountain biking equipment for the three days is provided along with a back-up vehicle, guides, mechanic and first aid equipment.
Day 1: Approx. 42km (around 4 hours biking + breaks)
Day 2: Approx. 38km (around 4 hours biking + breaks)
Day 3: Approx. 40km (around 5 hours biking + breaks)
After three days of biking you will end at Makuzi Beach Lodge in Chintheche where you will have time for some rest and recuperation.
Makuzi Beach Lodge is situated on the lush northern shores of Lake Malawi. It is one of the Malawi’s only private white sand beaches which provides guests with a superb, secluded retreat and wonderful views across Africa’s third biggest freshwater lake. All chalets are en-suite with a stunning lake views set in perfectly manicured gardens. This relaxed lakeshore lodge is a perfect retreat with a well-deserved reputation or a warm hospitality and great facilities.
As soon as you are done with breakfast, we will depart from Makuzi Beach and drive you over to Chelinda for an alpine experience, unique on the African continent.
Located high on the Nyika Plateau within Nyika National Park, Chelinda Camp overlooks a crystal-clear dam with panoramic views of rolling hills and isolated ridges with a rich expanse of grasslands, dotted with herds of wildlife from eland to zebras and roan antelope. Accommodation at Chelinda Camp consists of two options. There are four chalets which have two bedrooms, a bathroom, lounge, dining area with a fireplace and a small kitchen. There are also six en-suite rooms with twin beds which share a dining, bar and lounge area complete with luxurious furnishings and an inviting fireplace for those cosy nights.
Warm clothing should be carried as nights on the plateau get chilly.
Today you will do The Livingstonia Trail, which is a two-night/three-day hike comprising approximately six hours walking per day. The first day traverses the high plateau grasslands as far as the Phata Stream where camp is made.
The second day is a steep descent through the Mwenembwe Forest to the boundary of the Nyika National Park at Chakaka Village.
The third day is along the steep sided North Rumphi valley through Malawian villages where the people eke out an existence from the steep slopes. There is a final ascent to Livingstonia.
Accommodation is in trails camps that are situated near rivers; each site has sturdy small tents, eco-friendly latrine services (long drops) and bucket showers provided, with water heated over the fire. Drinking water is available throughout the trip from the mountain streams; however, once you reach the park boundary on the second day it is not advisable to drink from these. Three wholesome meals a day are provided; the exact menu will depend on time of year and personal preferences.
After the hike you will go to Sangilo Lodge. Here you have two nights to recover from the hike and enjoy the beautiful northern lake shore.
Nestled around a secluded cove on the Sangilo Peninsula, the Sanctuary provides an idyllic lake retreat in northern Malawi. The tastefully furnished cliff-top chalets provide a unique view along the peninsula, to Chilumba Island and across Lake Malawi to the magnificent Livingstonia mountain range in Tanzania.
All good things must come to an end and today after breakfast we will drive back to Lilongwe International Airport for your flight back home
